"There is no magical formula for weight control. The average Canadian spends 85% or more of his/her leisure time in passive activities (reading or watching T.V.) and 78% of Canadians over 14 devote less than one hour per week of their leisure time in any kind of physical activity.
According to static Canada (MediResource), "Obesity is a leading cause of preventable illness and death in North America. In recent years, the number of overweight people in industrialized countries has increased significantly, so much that the World Health Organization (WHO) has called obesity an epidemic. In the USA over 50% of the population (about 150 million people) are overweight. In Canada, about 40% t0 60% of adults have a weight problem".
People who are obese are at a much higher risk for serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, gall bladder disease and different types of cancer than people who have a healthy weight.
